“Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get!” – Forrest Gump.
One of my favorite quotes from a beautiful and inspiring movie, in which
Forrest does what he does, simply because his heart is in it!
The month of September 2021 has truly exemplified this quote in all its
meaning for me. I learned to play a difficult musical instrument – Dhol. The
feeling of achievement after playing this 22-kilo heavy instrument well, on a
momentous occasion was a delicious caramel chocolatey moment in life. On the
other hand, a knee injury a week later while playing cricket was like the
flavour that I don’t really enjoy too much, but had to experience it slowly to
reach the road to recovery.
A day later, my first corporate webinar in the counseling and wellbeing space was another new flavor that I
was a bit nervous to try but one that I enjoyed a lot - wanting to taste more
of it. After this, came an absolute bitter-chocolate experience which I had
heard about in stories but never imagined would happen with me. This flavour
left a dark lingering after taste in my life.
Reflecting on the past 4 weeks, a thought that kept springing to my mind
was that experiencing the highs and lows, the losses and gains is like eating a
box of chocolates. Some we love a lot, some taste alright and others we don’t
like at all.
I write this series of haikus to acknowledge such small and big moments
in our lives that come with their share of joy and sorrow, triumph and defeat,
helplessness and hope. What matters though is how we remember those moments in
life and how much we learn and change in a positive way.

She missed her new toy
Lost in the park, but found a
New friend to play with!
His best friend moved cities
He missed his buddy, but made
Many friends again!
Didn’t clear his exams
Lost a year, but shined in his
True passion for dance!
Siblings lost their folks
All alone, they found love and
Strength in each other!
Lost her innocence
Fear and trauma in her now
Scared to think or feel
Rise above she did
Empowered and strong, she found
Her inner true self!
They lost the rat race
Missed the promotion and raise
But found their own pace!
Her partner left her
Her love and life mate now gone
Found herself again
With changing times, we
Lose our old relationships,
Have to let them go!
And we find new friends,
Heartful connections anew
For new memories!
You lose innocence
Find inner strength to go on
Let’s treasure this You!
You lose love at times
And you find yourself again
Spend time with this self!
Let go of people
You don’t need the negative
Relish the peace now!
We miss who have gone
Yet forget those around us
Cherish them today!
